Scholarship Spotlight – In Memoriam
Welsh/Minniti Scholarship
Judges James C. Welsh and Anthony Minniti were beloved jurists, community leaders, and men of great faith and humanity. Their untimely passing during the COVID-19 epidemic prevented the workers’ compensation community from fully expressing the impact of their loss. Friends for decades, these two men shared a common bond of compassion and a love of justice. The Welsh-Minniti Scholarship is an opportunity for donors to carry forward their love of learning, of social justice, and their commitment to injured workers and their families.
Ted Smyk Scholarship:
Theodore (Ted) S. Smyk passed away from complications of pancreatitis on August 10, 2014. Donations have been raised to create a KCNJ Memorial Scholarship in his name. Born in Binghamton, NY, he went on to earn his BA in political science at Syracuse University in 1968. After graduation he landed a job as an insurance investigator with Crawford and Company. Ted would eventually move to NJ where he remained in the insurance industry for the entirety of his career. Ted was Vice President, Claims at Magna Carta Companies in Manhattan at the time of his death. He and his family were longtime Princeton residents. He was a Police Athletic League (PAL) organization member and coach. Ted experienced first-hand the impact that a serious work-related injury can have on families. Ted Smyk and his family admired and supported the KCNJ mission. He possessed a generous spirit for those in need.
Honorable Virginia M Dietrich Scholarship:
Honorable Virginia M. Dietrich, 62, a judge of Workers' Compensation, born in Trenton, Judge Dietrich was a lifelong resident of Mercer County. She obtained both her undergraduate and law degrees at The Catholic University of America. In her law practice, Judge Dietrich specialized in workers' compensation, matrimonial, and real estate law. In 2002, Governor Donald DiFrancesco nominated and the New Jersey Senate confirmed her appointment as a judge of Workers' Compensation. She soon was appointed an administrative supervisory judge and at the time of her death she was the chief administrative supervisory judge, reporting to the director of Workers' Compensation. Early in her legal career, she served many weekends at a homeless shelter in New York City. As an attorney, she represented many individuals of limited economic means on a pro bono or reduced fee basis. As a judge, she was determined to make certain that injured workers received the full compensation to which they were entitled under the law.
